About Jeff's Volunteering

Jeff is a dedicated volunteer, and has regularly given his time and skills to charitable organizations and causes including: The March of Dimes, Komen Race for The Cure, the Cleveland Marathon, airport mock disasters, and more.

In 2019 Jeff began volunteering with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio as a range safety officer (RSO) for GSNEO's inaugural year of bringing the sport of air rifle to it's three campsites.  The girls are introduced to the safe and proper use of air rifles and then given an opportunity to learn marksmanship on air rifle ranges the GSNEO has invested heavily into.  GSNEO uses a number of RSOs to ensure that every participant is properly supervised.

Jeff was the founding Communications Director with the Northeast Ohio Medical Response Corps, an organization of volunteer EMTs that serves numerous charitable agencies by providing pre-hospital first responder care and event communication.

2019 marked Jeff's 27th year with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s MS150 Bike Tour and 22nd serving on its Bike Committee.

As a teenager, Jeff became involved with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's "Pedal to The Point" bike tour from Berea to Sandusky, volunteering in an EMT vehicle. A few short years later, Jeff took over coordination of all communication resources and now serves in a role similar to a dispatcher and oversees a team of 35 volunteers.

Operating out of 911 call centers and Sheriff's offices during the two-day, 150 mile tour, Jeff and his volunteers oversee all emergency and medical needs on the route, radio dispatch for NEOMRC medical units to provide first responder care, and engage local Fire & EMS resources as needed or requested by the first responders.

Jeff is a Trustee on the Lake Erie Amateur Radio Association Board of Directors, serving since 1999 as Secretary and currently as its Treasurer.

Jeff became an FCC licensed Amateur Radio Operator in his early teens. Ham radio is one of the many technical hobbies that led him to volunteer organizations.

He has participated in mock airport disaster training, real declared disasters, bike tours, marathons, motorcycle rides, and many other events, providing two-way radio communication for event organizers.

One local event that LEARA has provided communication and event support for is the Hermes Cleveland / Nordonia Hills Chamber of Commerce Duathlon.

This bike and run event is typically held along the Nesbitt side streets and utilizes the Metroparks trail for the run portion.  (Not to mention, the berm of SR82 as shown in the photo.)

In the past, Jeff has served as the sweep vehicle, ensuring that the last bicyclist's location was known at all times, due to the fact that the route looped twice, which made it unclear where the last rider truly was.

Jeff also uses his technical and photography hobbies as another way to give back to the community.
