About Jeff

Jeff Garvas is a 18-year resident of Macedonia, where he and his wife, Lori (Schultz), built their home and are raising their daughter Jessica, a sixth-grader at Lee Eaton.

Jeff met Lori, who was raised at the corner of Driftwood and Shepard and attended Nordonia High School, in 1998 at what was then the Northfield Center Fire Station, during an EMS protocol review meeting.  Both were volunteering for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s MS150 Bike Tour, formerly known as Pedal To The Point.  Jeff currently serves on the MS Bike Committee and has coordinated bicyclist support & EMS dispatching for 27 years, while Lori volunteers at the event as a registered nurse.

If you're one of the more than 2,000 cyclists who participate, you may have met Lori at the lunch stop.

Career

Jeff is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff with Verizon, formerly Alltel. He has worked at the Highland Rd. data center in Twinsburg for the last 15+ years.

He was previously the team lead in a Network Operations Center overseeing a staff of ten that was responsible for both Enterprise Telephony and Enterprise Contact Center Operations. Jeff now works in the Planning & Design organization for Unified Communications. He holds numerous professional-level industry certifications from Cisco Systems, with a focus on Networking & Unified Communications.  His IT skill-set is broad, and in 2017 the former Finance Director asked if he was interested in applying for the Director of IT vacancy within the city administration.

Jeff feels that his understanding of how major enterprises are adopting IT can help the City of Macedonia find new ways to embrace technology, cloud computing, and potentially find cost-cutting opportunities and/or improve efficiency, which is something the city has recently spent tens of thousands of dollars on to hire consultants.

Prior to working for Verizon, Jeff worked for a Valley View-based company that consulted to major telephone companies.  Prior to that work, Jeff both built one of Akron's first "mom and pop" Internet service providers from the ground up, and also contracted his skills to an ISP that was housed out of the former Macedonia Elementary School building (demolished in 2007) at 9735 Valley View Rd.  You can find his Linkedin Profile here.

Jeff is a regular volunteer and has served on the Board of Committees of numerous non-profit and charitable organizations.

Political Experience

Although never elected to a political office, Jeff is the founder of a non-profit organization that has spent the last 18 years shaping laws in the Ohio Statehouse, city council chambers, and the courts.

He has regularly attended City Council meetings across the northern portion of the state of Ohio to advise multiple councils.  He fully understands concepts such as the legislative process, municipal home rule authority, and he has a history of writing legislation that is statewide law today.
